He enlisted in the Navy in 1936 and did his basic training in Newport, RI.  He served on the USS Relief, a hospital ship, before being assigned to the USS Houston in 1939.

He was last seen pulling a raft with wounded sailors. Since his name never came up on any prison camp lists, we assume he and those with him were killed in the water.
